False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the yellow fever virus,a member of the flavivirus sub-group of arboviruses (RNA viruses possessing icosahedral symmetry and lipid envelopes). Togavirus diseases such as yellow fever are common where animal hosts and insect vectors are numerous; the yellow fever virus is borne by the mosquitoes Haemogogus sp. in South America and Aedes sp. in Africa,in whom it replicates but causes no disease. Infection in man occurs through a mosquito bite, giving rise to necrosis (cell death) of liver and kidneys, and internal haemorrhaging. Magnification: X 117,000 at 35mm size | |
