Cytomegalovirus ,a member of the herpesvirus group,causes a condition among newborns called cytomegalic disease,characterized by jaundice & an enlarged liver & spleen. It is transmitted to the infant by the mother either while in womb or during birth. The virus earned its name cytomegalo,meaning large cell,from the swollen appearance of an infected cell.
