Guy de Chauliac (c.1300-1368),French surgeon. De Chauliac was the most eminent surgeon of his time in Europe. He was physician to Popes Clement VI,Innocent VI and Urban V at Avignon,France. His Chirugia magna (1363) was used as a manual by physicians for the next three centuries. In this book,he describes surgical procedures,such as those for treating hernias and cataracts,and he describes the use of a narcotic inhalation to induce sleep in patients during surgery.
