False colour scanning electron micrograph of Shetland wool taken from a knitted pullover. Wool is the hair of sheep & reveals a similar structure as human hair. The cuticle or outer layer (visible here) is scaly. Beneath this is the cortex, the bulk of hair & which contains hair pigments. At the centre is the medulla, which may be hollow. Hair cells are dead except for a layer at the base of the root. Cells here continue to divide forming new cells while pushing the older ones upward. Wool serves as a protection against inclement weather. Magnification: X143 at 35mm size,& X1000 at 10X8 inch size. Original is BW print H120/038 | |
