Human cell nuclei. A confocal light micrograph (LM) of human nuclei (blue). Nuclei contain most of a cell's genetic material, organized as multiple long, linear DNA molecules in complex with histones (green) and other proteins (red),to form chromosomes. Histones are the chief protein components of chromatin and act as spools around which DNA is wound to pack it inside the nucleus. Without histones, the unwound DNA in a human cell would be about 1.8 metres long. Histones also play a role in gene regulation. Magnification: x2800 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
