HeLa cells. Confocal light micrograph of three HeLa cells. The cells are attached (at lower centre) suggesting that a cell divided into three,rather than the usual two,daughter cells. The cell nuclei,which contain the cells' genetic information,are pink. Microtubules,protein filaments that form part of the cytoskeleton,are yellow. The cytoskeleton maintains the cell's shape,allows some cellular mobility and is involved in intracellular transport. HeLa cells are a continuously cultured cell line of human cancer cells. They are immortal and so thrive in the laboratory. HeLa cells are widely used in biological and medical research
