BCG vaccine. Colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of BCG vaccine infecting a human white blood cell. BCG vaccines are live but attenuated bacterial cells,Mycobacterium bovis, that immunize patients against tuberculosis. The BCG vaccine is seen as a membrane-enclosed circle at centre, surrounded by the blue and yellow mass of the blood cell. This weakened bacterial cell will sensitise the immune system,so that if tuberculosis infection occurs, the immune system reacts more rapidly, producing antibodies that kill invading microorganisms. BCG vaccine was discovered in 1924. Magnification: x43,200 at 6x4.5cm size | |
