Artwork of a volcanic moon eclipsing a star. The moon is in a close orbit around a hypothetical giant planet somewhat like Neptune. Like Io,which orbits Jupiter in our own Solar System, the moon is constantly being flexed by powerful tidal forces from the nearby planet. This continually heats the satellite's interior, and that heat is released through the surface via ceaseless volcanic activity. The satellite is eclipsing the planet's parent star. The eclipse allows us to witness not only the star's stunning atmosphere (corona) but also the vibrant volcanic activity which scars the surface of this dramatic little world | |
