Pollen threads and brochosomes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of brochosomes (pink) from a leafhopper insect (Family Cicadellidae) amongst evening primrose (Oenothera sp.) pollen threads. Brochosomes are granular excretions that leafhoppers coat themselves in. They protect the insect from the sugary waste that it excretes. The pollen threads are secreted by pollen grains to hold them together in packages and probably to aid in attachment to insect pollinators. Pollen grains are the male sex cells of a flowering plant
