Tethering stone. This stone was used to tether animals with a rope secured around the groove in its middle. The ruler at lower right indicates the size of the stone. This stone was found in the Libyan Desert,a desert that forms the eastern part of the Sahara. The Libyan Desert,like the rest of the Sahara,is mostly uninhabited,but in the past the climate was wetter and livestock grazed here. Old tethering stones such as these are part of the evidence for this wetter past
