Air pollution. False-colour image of smoke rising from the chimney of a power station. The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil or gas) in power stations has a large potential for polluting the atmosphere. The main combustion products are carbon dioxide (the infamous 'greenhouse' gas) and sulphur oxides (which contribute to acid rain). Modern power stations, particularly in the coal industry, combat this with more efficient combustion technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment to remove sulphur dioxide from the smoke. The power station seen here is Longannet, near Edinburgh,Scotland | |
