The thick smoke plume covering much of the city here is thought to be from an oil-filled trench that had been set alight to provide a smokescreen against aerial attacks. Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq,and stands on the Tigris river,part of which is seen at bottom left. This image shows the northeastern part of the city. Image taken by the QuickBird satellite
