Stubble burning. Smoke rising from burning stubble in a rice field. Stubble is the dry stalks of cereal crops left in fields after a harvest. Burning stubble is a traditional method of destroying any plants and insect pests left behind after harvesting. However, the vast quantities of smoke and carbon dioxide produced have led to environmental concerns. Stubble burning is therefore carefully controlled. Photographed in Spain | |
