Deforestation. This land has been cleared of rainforest by slash-and-burn forest clearance. The trees are cut and burnt in situ to remove all traces of ground cover. This leaves the soil exposed to rapid erosion by water,which creates gullies and removes vast quantities of topsoil. Slash-and-burn clearing is often performed to make way for grazing pasture,however the removal of the soil makes the land infertile and unproductive. Photographed in Laos
