A dense plume of smoke from a forest fire in the Amazon Basin adds to the smoke pall that already obscures the ground in this photograph taken from the space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-26 in September 1988. The whole of the Amazon Basin was obscured by smoke from the clearing and burning of tropical forest,pasture and croplands. The smoke cloud was the largest and densest yet seen by astronauts,covering about one third of South America
