Sand dunes. White sand dunes in the Tularosa Basin at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert. This area is the largest gypsum sand dune field in the world. These white dunes have engulfed over 700 square kilometres of desert. The gypsum (hydrated calcium sulphate) crystallised from the water of an ancient lake as it gradually evaporated.
