Mangrove tree and roots. Mangroves have evolved a number of physiological and morphological traits that enable them to grow in salty, saturated soils. Aerial roots and pneumatophores allow the plant to receive enough carbon dioxide, whilst excess salt taken up from the water is deposited in leaves which are then dropped. The importance of mangrove swamps as coastal buffers has been highlighted following the South-East Asian tsunami in December 2004 | |
