Mount Etna erupting. Satellite image of plumes of smoke issuing from the volcano Mount Etna during its eruption in autumn 2002. Mount Etna occupies the eastern part of the Italian island of Sicily. Etna is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and stands 3323 metres above sea level. It continuously experiences minor eruptions, but this was on a much larger scale. Numerous earthquakes opened up fissures on its flanks, and lava flowed down its northern and southern sides. Photographed by the Quickbird satellite on 31st October 2002 | |
