| 1987 storm wind strength record. Data from a recording anemometer showing wind strength during the storm of 1987. A recording anemometer,or anemograph,consists of an instrument that is turned by the wind,attached to pens that trace the measurements on to a rotating drum. The traces show variations in wind force,and the strength and frequency of gusts over time. The storm hit the South East of England on 16th October 1987 bringing hurricane-force winds. It developed rapidly and forecasters were unable to predict its path or ferocity. Gusts measuring over 165 kilometres an hour were recorded on the South coast. The storm felled 15 million trees,severely damaged buildings,blew ships ashore and killed 18 people | |
