Pollen corona. Disk of luminous light surrounding the setting Sun. A corona is an optical atmospheric effect, which in this case has been caused by a high concentration of tree pollen in the atmosphere. Coronas can also occur when light from the Sun or Moon is diffracted by water droplets in a thin layer of cloud. The setting sun is also being distorted. Solar distortion occurs as the light coming from the Sun is refracted by the different layers of the Earth's atmosphere. The lower layers of the atmosphere also contain large amounts of haze and dust, which make the Sun appear darker near the horizon. Photographed in Finland | |
