| World map. Lighted candle on top of a book which is on top of an assortment of historical maps. The most prominent map is the Nouvelle Mappe Monde,the New Map of the World,drawn around 1750. The map is divided into two hemispheres,detailing the known world. Northeast- ern Canada and Alaska,USA,do not appear on the map as they had not been properly charted at that time. The borders of the map show celestial scenes reflecting popular religious beliefs of the time. These contrast with the astronomical diagrams on the far left and right of the map.
