Iroquais longhouse,illustration. The Iroquois (also known as the Haudenosaunee) are a Native American people found in what is now the north-eastern USA. The traditional Iroquois longhouse was a structure of wood boards and bark arranged on a framework of poles. It provided shelter for several families,and would have a clan symbol placed over the doorway. Ventilation openings let out smoke from the cooking fires. Raised platforms were used to sleep,work and store crops (maize cobs shown here). The typical size of such a longhouse was 25 by 6 by 6 metres
