The image shows an inebriated man drinking beer from a bottle whilst smoking a cigarette in the rural town of Clanwillian,in the Western Cape of South Africa,on a saturday morning. Low-income workers in the area are predominantly farm workers, labourers and blue collar workers who receive weekly wages every friday. Many of the adults have an alcohol problem and consequently the Western Cape province has the world's highest rates of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). This problem is thought to originate from the "Dop system" introduced by colonialist farmers in the 1700's who included bread, tobacco and wine as part of their payment to labourers. The adverse impact of the dop system is such that community members remain impoverished and suffer negative biological, psychological and social consequences | |
