Large Space Simulator. Technicians inside the ESA's (European Space Agency) Large Space Simulator (LSS) during a refurbishment. The LSS measures 15 metres high and 10 metres in diameter. It is Europe's largest vacuum chamber and is used to subject entire satellites to space-like conditions ahead of launch. The 121-segment mirror array seen here reflects simulated sunlight into the chamber,at the same time as the walls are pumped full of -190 degrees Celsius liquid nitrogen, together recreating the extreme thermal conditions found in orbit. Embedded sensors and measurement devices check whether the test satellite maintains an acceptable internal temperature range without buckling or other unwanted temperature-driven effects.
