Caddisfly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a caddisfly (order Trichoptera). Caddisflies are moth-like insects but have hairy wings rather than the scaled wings of moths and butterflies. They have large compound eyes (red). The adults emerge in spring in large numbers for a mating flight. After shedding eggs into the water,the adults die. The larvae of caddisflies are aquatic,living in protective cases made out of silk and debris such as sand,gravel and bits of plants. Magnification: x7 when printed 10 centimetres wide
