Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko from Rosetta. This comet (67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko) is around 3.5 by 4 kilometres. The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 on a 10 year mission to reach this comet. It entered orbit on 6 August 2014 at a point in the comet's orbit beyond the orbit of Mars. The first mission designed to land on a comet,it is carrying instruments and a lander to map and study the comet's surface and core. Studying comets gives insights into conditions during the formation of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago. Image obtained on 3 August 2014 from 285 kilometres | |
