Heberden's node on finger. A 68 year old woman's finger affected by osteoarthritis showing Heberden's nodes,a ring- like swelling near the fingertips. These nodes arise in the interphalangeal joints and are hard swellings formed by a lump of cartilage that covers the upper surface of the joint. Osteoarthritis is a disease of joint cartilage,associated with secondary changes in underlying bone which may be painful and ultimately deform and impair the function of the affected joint.
