Solar updraft tower, diagram. This technology is a form of renewable energy used to generate electricity from solar power. The arrows at left show the internal mechanism, while the artwork at right shows the exterior. Cold air is drawn into the base of the tower (blue arrows). Air is heated by sunlight (yellow arrows) falling on the glass solar collector. Air movement (orange arrows) drives turbines (grey) to generate electricity. Lower thermal storage saltwater ponds (blue) release heat at night to keep the turbines running. The height of the solar tower creates an updraft of rising hot air (red arrows). Prototype solar updraft towers were first built in the 1980s | |
