| Hardie compressed air locomotive. 19th-century artwork of the compressed air locomotive developed in 1878 by US inventor Robert Hardie with backing from US civil engineer Herman Haupt. The locomotives were built by the Pneumatic Tramway Engine Company for use on the Second Avenue Railroad,New York City,USA. They had four tanks storing compressed air used to drive the engine,and had a range of about 13 kilometres. This engraving dates from 1888 | |
