Blood-letting instructions. 15th-century diagram of a male figure with instructions for blood-letting. This involved cutting the skin and letting blood flow out to restore balance in bodily fluids ('humours'). This practice was rarely beneficial to the patient. The areas labelled are the feet, hands, elbows, genitals, and parts of the head. The labels are in a form of Middle English. This page is from the 'Guild Book of the Barber Surgeons of York' (1486) | |
