Female reproductive system. Coloured hysterosalpingogram X-ray of the pelvis of a healthy woman. The uterus (womb) is at centre,to either side at the top of the uterus are the fallopian tubes, which end at the ovaries. The ovaries release an egg every month (ovulation),which is received by the fallopian tubes. It travels along the tubes to the uterus,a pear-shaped,hollow,muscular organ,in which the egg,if fertilised, will implant and grow. A hysterosalpingogram is taken after the introduction of a radio-opaque material to the uterus via a catheter in the vagina (bottom centre) |
