Argus II artificial retina patient identifying letters on a bright screen during testing. The Argus II was developed by US company Second Sight. It consists of a 60-electrode array implanted in the retina, plus external equipment. Images from the camera integrated in the glasses are sent to the control box that processes them and sends impulses to the retinal implant. Users of this implant (here in the patient's right eye) are able to perceive contrasts between light and dark areas, but not yet full vision. Argus II was approved for sale in Europe in 2011.
