Ant research, conceptual artwork. The stilts attached to this ant's legs, and the map it is consulting, represent research that was done to determine how ants navigate. Ants build up a mental image of their route, enabling them to repeat the same journey many times. However, when stilt-like extensions were added to their legs, the ants over-estimated the distance travelled, and lost their way. This indicated that ant navigation is due to programmed responses, rather than higher cognitive abilities.
