Ovarian follicle. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an ovary, showing a primary follicle. Primary follicles contain a central oocyte (female germ cell, egg) surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal granulosa cells. These follicles have developed from earlier and less mature primordial follicles, and have entered the process of folliculogenesis whereby they enlarge and mature into more advanced follicle types. Completion of folliculogenesis results in ovulation of the oocyte. Granulosa cells also termed follicle cells, respond to follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) by secreting oestrogen hormones necessary for follicle growth and maintenance of estrogen-dependant organs in the body.
