| Flower of the hybrid Tango lily Cappuccino showing the reproductive organs. Lilies are monocotyledonous plants with three-fold symmetry in the floral parts.The picture shows 6 anthers (orange),which are the pollen-bearing structures. Each pollen grain is a microspore containing the male gametophyte of the plant. To the centre,the columnar style terminates in the stigma (mauve hue),also of three-fold symmetry. The stigmatic surface is sticky. On contact with this surface,a compatible pollen grain germinates to produce a long pollen tube which penetrates the surface,grows down the column to the ovary below,and conveys the male gametophyte to an ovule,effecting fertilisation | |
