Black hole. Artwork of the accretion disc (purple) and polar jets (yellow) formed by a black hole. Black holes are regions in space where the pull of gravity exceeds the velocity of light. As matter spirals into the black hole,it grows denser and hotter,resulting in an emission of radiation both by matter within the accretion disc and from the poles of the black hole. The latter effect causes the jets shown here
