Particle tracks from a proton-proton collision seen by the ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva,Switzerland. The detector is seen end-on here, with various elements shaded. The blue rectangles are the muon chambers. Before the collision the ions had been accelerated to 7 TeV (tera electron volts) by the large hadron collider (LHC). The collision produced a J/psi meson. The particle was not seen, but is revealed through its decay products; a pair of muons (yellow lines) and a photon (yellow and green blocks between the muon lines) | |
