Omega Centauri,composite image. This globular cluster contains several million stars and is located around 17,000 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Centaurus. This image,which combines optical and infrared data,was published in 2011. It was obtained with the OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST),at the Paranal Observatory,Chile. This powerful camera has a field of view wide enough to include the faint outer regions of this globular cluster,one of the largest in the night sky.
