Water lice mating,Light micrograph of two water lice (Asellus aquaticus) mating on a skeletonised leaf (heads at right). The water louse is a freshwater crustacean. It is omnivorous and scavenges for food in rivers and streams. This species breeds throughout the year,with the female carrying the fertilised eggs in a brood pouch. Unlike many other crustaceans,in Asellus the male is larger than the female. Mating occurs between partial moults that allow the male to use specialised limbs called gonopods to transfer his sperm to the female's eggs. Magnification: x3 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
