Volcanic flood defences. Bulldozer being used to build flood defences along the banks of the Sungai Putih (White River) at the site of a previous lahar (volcanic mud flow) from the Gunung Merapi (Mount Merapi) volcano. Gunung Merapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes,located on the island of Java,28 kilometres north of the city of Yogyakarta. A series of eruptions in October and November 2010,thought to be the largest since the 1870s,killed around 350 people and led to over 350,000 being evacuated from surrounding villages and towns.
