It consists of a tapered head (red) that contains the genetic material,a basal body (top right) that contains mitochondria (light blue) that provide energy for the cell,and a tail (centre and bottom) that beats to propel the sperm. A sperm's tail's ability to move is partly due to the arrangement of microtubules (part of the cell's cytoskeleton,green) within the tail. The microtubules are arranged in a central axoneme with two central single microtubules and nine peripheral double microtubules.
