Recording thermometers (wet and dry). This apparatus and framework is designed to turn the thermometers over at a particular point and trigger a mechanism that preserves the temperature reading. They are also called reversing thermometers. The principle of reversing thermometers was first described by George Aime in 1845,but the first practical model was developed by the instrument makers Negretti and Zambra. The company they founded made the model shown here. The dry thermometer is at left. This equipment is being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service | |
