Charcoal production. Pile of wood that has been covered with turf and clay before being lit to produce charcoal in a slow and controlled burning process. Charcoal is a form of carbon produced by burning wood in little or no oxygen. The ladder allows workers to add or remove material to control the process. A bare pile of wood (not covered) is at centre right, and a cart at upper left carried away the finished charcoal product.
