Hydrogen combustion. Experiment demonstrating the production of water from hydrogen and oxygen. At left, metal turnings are reacting with an acid. The hydrogen gas that is being produced is being passed through a drying liquid (centre) to remove water vapour. The dry hydrogen is then being burnt in air at the flame at top right. This combustion of hydrogen and oxygen has formed water, droplets of which are running down the inverted glass tube. A form of this experiment was first conducted by Lavoisier in 1777.
