Genetically modified rice. Geneticist comparing normal rice (right) with low-phytate rice (left) that has been engineered with a gene to make it a golden colour so that it can be distinguished from the normal plant. Low-phytate rice has been developed to contain lower levels of the phosphorous-based phytic acid. This allows nutrients to be absorbed more easily by the digestive systems of both humans and livestock. It also reduces the amount of phosphate run-off from agricultural land, reducing the impact on the environment. Photographed at the Dale Bumpers National Rice Center in Stuttgart,Arkansas,USA | |
