Recession of the Pasterze Glacier. This sign (lower right) marks the edge of the glacier in 1990,showing the rapid recession that has taken place since then. Glaciers are rivers of ice that form when compacted snow from high ground turns into ice and flows downhill under its own weight. This glacier, over 8 kilometres in length,is one of the longest in Austria. It is currently retreating, decreasing in length by about 10 metres per year. Glacial retreat is thought to be caused by global warming. Photographed in Hohe Tauern National Park,Austria,in the eastern Alps | |
