Total solar eclipse. Sequence of images of the sun during a total solar eclipse. At totality (centre) the moon fits over the sun and only the sun's corona (atmosphere) is visible. The moment of totality lasts for only a few minutes. Also seen are Baily's beads,a phenomenon caused by craters in the surface of the moon allowing beads of light to shine through to Earth. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. Photographed in March 2005,from Panama | |
