Nepenthes Mensae,Mars, satellite image. North is towards right. This is an overhead stereo-colour image of what is thought to be a river delta formation,in the Nepenthes Mensae region of Mars. The fan-shaped structure (about 300 metres high) is just below and right of centre,at the mouth of the valley pointing downwards from upper left. The other mesa-like structures are thought to have been formed as the rock surrounding them was eroded away by large outflows of groundwater. The image data is from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express Orbiter | |
