Wheat grain. Light micrograph of a wheat grain,the seed of the wheat plant (Triticum aestivium). A seed contains an embryo,a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow (deep red,left),and a supply of food called the endosperm (red/blue,right). The food is used either while the embryo develops,or during germination. In wheat grains,the food store is the carbohydrate starch. They also contain the protein gluten,which is responsible for the stickiness of dough produced from wheat flour. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide
