African lions. African lioness (Panthera leo) resting with her cubs. African lions are predatory carnivores that live in the savannah grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. Usually between two and four cubs are born in a litter. Many cubs do not survive their first year, being killed by predators or by a male who takes over the pride. Female cubs stay with the pride, while the males leave at around three years of age to find their own pride. Photographed in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area,Tanzania | |
